In version 2 of Oracle's OpenStack for Oracle Linux, Oracle is the first manufacturer to ship the cloud management framework OpenStack completely into a Docker instance. The advantage of this approach, according to Oracle, is that administrators can save themselves above all installing and configuring the numerous individual components of OpenStack.
The concept not only facilitates the installation and configuration of OpenStack , but above all the administration. For example, Oracle OpenStack can be updated during operation. A new installation is not necessary because just the docker container is updated.
Kolla and Ansible
Oracle has realized this concept using the OpenStack project " Kolla ". To distribute the containers, Oracle uses Playbooks from Ansible .Just a few days ago, Oracle's main competitor and upstream provider of Oracle Linux had announced Red Hat to take over Ansible , the provider of automation solutions and DevOps technology . The company competes with its main product Ansible Tower with "Puppet", "Chef" & Co, but relies more on DevOps procedures. The deal should be completed later this month.Components and modules
Oracle's OpenStack distribution is based on Kilo's latest (11th) OpenStack release and also supports the OpenStack modules "Orchestration" and "Murano" ( App Catalog). Oracle OpenStack also uses "MySQL" as the backend database in an Active-Active HA cluster, so Oracle's OpenStack environment can be easily deployed for high availability.
With the support of highly available MySQL clusters, you can also implement high scalability for policy services under "keystone" and identity tokens. It can be seen that Oracle primarily addresses service providers who can offer public cloud and hybrid cloud products with Oracle OpenStack .Likewise obvious, Oracle focuses primarily on existing Oracle customers, because Oracle OpenStack can be based on an existing Oracle stack if required, whereby the individual components are optimally matched to one another. In addition, the solution is also integrated with Oracle Linux, Oracle VM, Oracle Storage or MySQL.
The Oracle ZFS Storage Appliances or Oracle's All Flash FS Storage Systems should also operate with the help of "Cinder" drivers for Oracle Linux. However, these are still classified as Technology Preview in Oracle Linux.
opinions
Wim Coekaerts, Oracle's Senior Vice President of Linux and Virtualization Engineering, comments on the release of Oracle OpenStack: "Oracle OpenStack for Oracle brings together Oracle's expertise in implementing and supporting complex enterprise workloads with the flexibility of an OpenStack cloud environment. The product addresses the current challenges of OpenStack integrations by providing a single-source solution ".
Download and availability
Oracle OpenStack for Oracle Linux is available after registration for free download . However, users without subscriptions will not receive support from Oracle. Customers with an Oracle Premier Support subscription also receive support for the back-end database, Oracle Linux, Oracle VM, Oracle Linux as a guest operating system, and Infrastructure Support with Oracle Enterprise Manager. If you want to test the software, you can rely on an "OVA" image that provides the entire environment as a virtual machine.
